Book review by Terry James
My friend and colleague Jonathan Brentner has written a most important book for this late hour of the Age of Grace. I am most pleased to be allowed to review this excellent work.
His latest book, Irrevocable: The Case for Israel, deals with one of the most consequential and controversial questions of our day: Has God replaced Israel with the Church? Motivated by the battle for Israel that rages in churches across America, Brentner wrote the book to provide irrefutable Biblical evidence for the Jewish state’s continuing place in Bible prophecy.
Breana Claussen, founder and president of Harbinger’s Daily, wrote this in the foreword after reading the entire manuscript:
“Jonathan Brentner’s book is one of the most timely for our generation—laying out an irrefutable case for modern Israel and the future of the Jewish State stretching from Genesis to Revelation.
“His case shatters all reasonable doubt about where Israel stands in the heart and promises of God. Brentner expertly dismantles the twisted theology that the enemy has used to foment antisemitism within the Church and equips readers with a stunning, in-depth knowledge of God’s plans for modern and future Israel.”
Irrevocable: The Case for Israel does more than just refute the no-Israel teachings that have swept through Bible-believing churches during the past twenty-five years. It’s not enough just to know why the popular views of eschatology fall far short when held up to the light of God’s Word; we must also understand why it matters.
In presenting his case for Israel, Brentner highlights the aspect of God’s mercy that runs through all His covenants with and promises to Israel. His steadfast love toward the Jewish people, despite their long history of rebellion, deepens our grasp of the grace He continues to lavish upon us as New Testament saints.
Brentner’s book strikes at the heart of the faulty reasoning that, throughout church history, has caused theologians to conclude that God has rejected Israel and replaced the nation with the church. It’s the unspoken yet evident belief that Christians are somehow more deserving of God’s mercy than the Jewish people. It’s the tragic failure to recognize that we are all equally unworthy of the Lord’s promises of a glorious future and thus equally in need of His saving grace and mercy.
Brentner explains these additional implications of erasing Israel from Bible prophecy…
First, amillennialism erases much of what the Bible says about Jesus’ future exaltation. The spectacular nature of His Second Coming and reign over the nations becomes an ordinary event that wraps up human history and initiates the eternal state. The no-Israel view of prophecy obscures the spectacular, earth-shattering nature of His glorious return that Scripture describes.
Second, the removal of Israel from Bible prophecy skews what Scripture teaches about God’s redemptive plans for humanity. That God is not yet finished with the Jewish people is glorious news for all of humanity, as they will experience millennial conditions under the rule of a righteous King.
Third, apart from keeping Israel at the forefront of Bible prophecy, it’s impossible to fully understand what’s happening today as our world teeters on the brink of catastrophic wars.
