Stupidocrisy: When Hating Jews Becomes Fashionable :: By Bill Wilson

There is something deeply disturbing happening in our culture. Antisemitism, the ancient hatred that ultimately helped produce the Holocaust, is again creeping into politics, entertainment, and public discourse.

A North Carolina Democratic legislative candidate reportedly posted photographs of herself smiling near crematorium ovens at Dachau while suggesting supporters of President Donald Trump belonged in concentration camps.

Over six million Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. Using the machinery of genocide against political opponents shows how hatred consumes people, invoking history’s worst atrocities to justify their contempt. And this has spread across society.

For example, the war between Israel and Hamas has become a cultural battleground. At the New York Film Festival, protesters challenged the documentary “NAZA,” saying its portrayal of Palestinian civilian deaths failed to provide adequate context about Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack that started the war. Protesters displayed images of hostages and victims outside the premiere.

Criticism of Israel or its government can be part of legitimate political debate. However, it turns dangerous when October 7 is minimized, Jewish civilians become abstractions, and hostility toward Jews is agitated. The cry “from the river to the sea” carries particular weight because it calls for the elimination of Israel and the Jewish people living there. Jewish suffering cannot become acceptable collateral damage in somebody else’s political cause.

Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, barred Rapper Macklemore from performing at his stadium, citing what he called the rapper’s ‘broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery. Kraft said Macklemore effectively minimized Hamas’ October 7 massacre while portraying Israel as the aggressor.

Kraft has spent years confronting antisemitism through his Blue Square initiative and building bridges across racial and religious communities. Macklemore rejects accusations of antisemitism, but Kraft drew a firm line: advocacy for Palestinians cannot become justification for Hamas terrorism, antisemitism, or the murder of Jews. An American Jewish Committee survey found 86% of American Jews believe antisemitism has increased since October 7.

Visit the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, or Israel, and you will see where hatred can lead when a society excuses it long enough. It begins with words, stereotypes, mockery, and rationalizations. Eventually people become categories rather than human beings, and conscience becomes subordinate to ideology.

Scripture speaks directly to the treatment of the Jewish people. Zechariah 2:8 says, “for he who touches you touches the apple of His [God’s] eye.”

Political disagreements will come and go. Governments and their policies remain open to scrutiny. When hatred becomes more important than truth, facts become inconvenient, history gets rewritten, and evil becomes easier to justify. Antisemitism has traveled that road before, with horrific consequences.

Putting hatred above truth is, say it with me…Stupidocrisy.
