The heat dome that scorched parts of the West last week will focus across the Mississippi Valley into the mid-Atlantic and Southeast this week. Daytime highs will soar as much as 10-15 degrees above historic averages the first few days of September. Temps will reach well into the 90s and could approach 100 in places.
Hurricane Lowell continued its trek near the Hawaiian Islands on Sept. 5. A Category 4 with 150 mph winds is forecast to approach Kauai on Monday. Fortunately, the center is expected to miss Kauai. The storm is forecast to slow and turn sharply northward or northeastward by Sept. 6, and accelerate to “near major hurricane strength when it makes its closest approach.”
