Text Theme: God is everywhere present, sees all things, knows all hearts, and calls every sinner to repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Introduction
There is a question that rises from the conscience of every person who has ever tried to hide from God: How does God know? How does He know what was done in the dark? How does He know what was whispered in secret? How does He know what passed through the mind, what stirred in the heart, what was covered by a smile, denied by the lips, or buried beneath years of silence? The answer is found in the omnipresence of Almighty God. God is not limited by distance, darkness, time, or human concealment. He is everywhere present. He sees all, knows all, remembers all, and will judge all.
Yet the same God who sees the sinner in guilt also sees the repentant heart that turns to Him for mercy. The God from whom no secret is hidden is also the God who has made salvation known through Jesus Christ.
- The Eyes of God Are in Every Place
Proverbs 15:3: “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.”
God does not merely look in certain places; His eyes are in every place. He sees the sanctuary and the street, the home and the workplace, the public act and the private motive. Nothing is outside His view. Men may divide life into what is seen and unseen, but before God there is no hidden room, no secret road, and no locked door.
Example: A child may think mischief is safe when a parent is not in the room. An employee may think dishonesty is safe when no supervisor is watching. A person may think sinful habits are safe because they happen behind a screen or behind a closed door. But God sees both the evil and the good. His presence reaches where human witnesses cannot.
- God’s Eyes Are Upon the Ways of Man
Job 34:21: “For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his goings.”
God sees not only where we are, but where we are going. He observes the direction of life. He sees the path of rebellion, the road of compromise, the steps of pride, and the wandering of the soul. He also sees the steps of faith, obedience, prayer, and repentance.
Example: A person may say, “I am not far from God,” while every choice carries him farther into sin. Another may say, “No one notices my struggle,” while God sees every tear, every temptation, every effort to return, and every step toward the cross. God sees all our goings.
- The Secret Sins of Man Are Before Him
Psalm 90:8: “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.”
Secret sins are not secret to God. They may be hidden from family, church, employer, neighbor, and friend, but they stand in the light of His countenance. The sinner’s darkness is not dark to God. What man covers, God uncovers. What man excuses, God weighs. What man forgets, God remembers. Consider Achan, who hid the forbidden spoil in his tent. Israel did not know at first, but God knew. The hidden thing brought trouble until it was exposed. So it is with the soul: secret sin may be buried beneath respectability, but it cannot be buried from God.
- God Knows the Secrets of Our Hearts
Psalm 44:21: “Shall not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.”
God knows more than outward conduct. He knows the secrets of the heart: the bitterness no one hears, the envy no one sees, the pride hidden beneath politeness, the unbelief hidden beneath religion, and the fear hidden beneath confidence. Men judge appearances, but God searches the heart. Judas could sit among the disciples, hold the bag, hear the sermons of Christ, and appear to be one of the faithful. But the Lord knew his heart. Religious association cannot hide an unconverted heart from God. The Lord knows what is within.
- God Will Judge All the Secrets of Humanity
Romans 2:16: “In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.”
The gospel does not deny judgment; it declares the only Savior from judgment. God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ. This means the final court will not be fooled by false testimony, altered records, practiced excuses, or human reputation. Christ will judge with perfect knowledge and perfect righteousness.
Example: In human courts, evidence may be lost, witnesses may be mistaken, and motives may remain unknown. But in God’s judgment, every fact is present, every motive is clear, and every secret is open. The Judge is the same Christ who offered Himself as the Savior.
- God Will Bring Every Secret to Judgment
Ecclesiastes 12:14: “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
Every work will be brought into judgment. Not some works, not public works only, not the works remembered by people, but every work. The secret thing will come forth, whether good or evil. Hidden wickedness will not escape God’s justice, and hidden faithfulness will not be forgotten by God’s grace.
Example: A quiet act of mercy done for Christ may never receive human applause, but God sees it. A private act of cruelty may never face earthly consequence, but God sees it too. The day of judgment will reveal that nothing was wasted, nothing was hidden, and nothing was beyond the reach of God’s holy knowledge.
- God Knows Everyone Who Trusts in Him
Nahum 1:7: “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knows them that trust in him.”
The omnipresence of God is not only terrifying to the unrepentant; it is comforting to the believer. The Lord knows them that trust in Him. He does not merely know about them; He knows them personally, savingly, tenderly, and faithfully. The sinner who flees to God for refuge is never overlooked.
Example: Elijah once felt alone, but God knew His faithful remnant. A suffering believer may feel forgotten, but God knows every prayer, every burden, and every trusting step. If you trust in Him, you are not lost in the crowd. The Lord knows your name, your need, and your faith.
- The LORD Knows Who Belongs to Him
2 Timothy 2:19: “Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his. And let everyone that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
The Lord knows those who belong to Him. Salvation is not uncertain to God. He knows His sheep. He knows the redeemed. He knows those whose sins have been washed in the blood of Christ. But the verse also gives a holy command: those who name the name of Christ must depart from iniquity. Grace does not excuse sin; grace delivers from sin.
Example: A passport identifies a citizen of a country, but the seal of God identifies those who are His. The true believer is known by the Lord and called to live apart from sin. The question is not merely, “Do I say I know God?” but “Does the Lord know me as one of His own?”
Conclusion: Come to Christ for Salvation
How does God know? He knows because He is God. He is everywhere present. His eyes are in every place. His eyes are upon the ways of man. Our secret sins are before Him. He knows the secrets of our hearts. He will judge the secrets of humanity by Jesus Christ. He will bring every secret thing into judgment. He knows everyone who trusts in Him. He knows those who belong to Him. This truth should awaken the careless, humble the proud, convict the sinner, comfort the believer, and drive every soul to Christ.
You cannot hide from God, but you can run to God. You cannot cover your sin well enough to escape His judgment, but the blood of Jesus Christ is sufficient to cleanse you from all sin. You cannot erase the record, but Christ can forgive the sinner who comes to Him in repentance and faith. The Lord Jesus Christ died for sinners, was buried, and rose again. He took upon Himself the judgment that guilty sinners deserve. He is able to save to the uttermost all who come unto God by Him. Do not wait until the day when every secret is revealed and every excuse is silenced. Come now.
Confess your sin. Turn from your iniquity. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.
