Christ is returning to keep His promise to His beloved church…
John 14:1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”
Christ is returning to fulfill His Covenants with Israel…
The Old Testament is filled with promises regarding God’s covenant to Abraham, that through his family, He would bless the world.
Genesis 12:1-3 “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
The Messianic promise to Abraham was fulfilled, completely and perfectly in Jesus…
Galatians 3:16 “The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.
- Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.
God’s Covenant with Israel was reaffirmed in David…
2 Samuel 7:16 “Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever. (cf. Psalm 89; Isaiah 11, 35, 40; Jeremiah 23, Ezekiel 34-39, Zechariah 12-14).
Christ is returning to fulfill His promise to Adam’s fallen race…
Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
In this verse is the ‘storyline’ of the whole Bible!
Satan would do damage to Christ and His Kingdom, but he would receive a mortal blow through Jesus’ death and victorious resurrection, thus purchasing redemption for all who would believe.
Christ is returning to this earth to be exalted…
- Jesus’ first coming to this earth was in obscurity and humiliation.
- At Calvary, He shed His blood on the cross for our sins.
- That was the last time the ‘unconverted’ would ever see Jesus that way.
- Three days later, He arose bodily from the dead, showing that He had conquered death. His return will be in glory, power, and majesty!
Hebrews 9:28 “Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Revelation 1:7 “’Look, he is coming with the clouds, and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth will mourn because of him.’ So shall it be! Amen.”
Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.”
How should our study of the Second Coming affect our lives?…
Romans 13:11-14 “And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”
A final consideration regarding the Second Coming of Christ…
Daniel 9:24 “Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.”
We need to focus our hearts and minds on the Second Coming…
Acts 1:11 “’Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’”
How then are we to live in this world?…
Titus 2:11-13 “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope— the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
