Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Many propose challenging questions regarding God’s existence. Some infer that to believe in God, you have to have ‘blind’ faith, but this is contrary to what the Bible actually reveals to us.
Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Proverbs 14:15 “The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.”
What about the evidence… is there really a God?
Throughout creation we see overwhelming design, order, and complexity, and thus signifying a Creator:
- Every time you see a watch, you know it has a designer/maker.
- Every time you see a painting, you know there is an artist/painter.
- Every time you see order, e.g., a note written in the sand on the beach saying “I love you,” you know there’s an intelligence indicated here, and this is not the confirmation of a random or chance happening.
If a ‘seeker’ honestly seeks and makes use of both logic and reason, they will find abundant ‘evidence’ throughout the cosmos for a Creator.
- Note that the word “cosmos” is defined as a finely-tuned, orderly system.
The First Principle of true spirituality, and answering the God question is our willingness to pursue open inquiry…
Jeremiah 29:13 “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Galileo, the famous Italian astronomer/mathematician, spoke eloquently regarding the God question…
“I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect had intended for us to forgo their use.”
Romans 1:18-20 “Men suppress the truth in unrighteousness…. Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities– his eternal power and divine nature— have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”
The existence of God cannot be ‘proved’ as many people seek proofs, but can logically be deducted within reason, and here’s why…
There are two basic methodologies in the research of truth claims:
- The Scientific Method, which seeks truth through the testing, replication, and validation of consistencies from ‘natural law.’
- The Legal/Historical Method, which seeks truth through the examination of the preponderance or weight of the historical evidence.
- Both operational science and the evidence of history strongly affirm the necessity of God’s required existence!
What Does the Bible Reveal Regarding Evidence for God’s Existence?
Psalm 19:1-4 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
Looking at the stars, understanding the vastness of the universe, observing the wonders of nature, seeing the beauty of a sunset— all of these things point to a Creator God, not mere happenstance of random processes of no purpose or design.
There is also evidence of God in our own hearts and within the conscience of all men…
Ecclesiastes 3:11 “He has also set eternity in the hearts of men.”
Deep within every human being is the recognition that there is something beyond this life, and someone beyond all this world can offer us.
The Bible is clear and definitive in response to disbelief…
Psalm 14:1 “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”
The vast majority of people throughout history believe in a Creator…
- In all cultures, in all civilizations, and on all continents, there is the invariable belief in the existence of some kind of God, the ultimate source of reality.
- Logically, we must assume there is just cause for this innate knowledge.
